The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment The Tuskegee Syphilis experiment (The official name was Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male) began in the 1930’s. It was an experiment on African Americans to study syphilis and how it affected the body and killed its victims done by Tuskegee Institute U.S. Public Health Service researchers. The initial purpose of the Syphilis study â€Å"was to record the natural history of syphilis in Blacks† (Tuskegee University, â€Å"About the USPHS Syphilis Study,† par. 2). The study was necessary because syphilis was a disease that didn’t yet have an official cure (when the study began in the 30’s). There were 600 men in all; 399 had syphilis and 201 served as a control group for the experiment. The Mississippi Appendectomy Study The Mississippi Appendectomy study started taking place in the 1920’s. The experiment consisted of excessive hysterectomies on many women mainly in the Deep South. Poor Black women were the main focus of the experiments as well as disabled women and women that the physicians thought were not worthy of reproducing. Young, less experienced doctors were told to perform the sterilization process so that they had â€Å"a chance to practice the procedure† (50). The experiment was unnecessary and served no true, ethical purpose. The doctors believed it was in order to perform the hysterectomies because the women seemed unfit to have children and to give the younger surgeons practice. In detail, while the women were having an appendectomy (removal of the appendix), the doctors would perform the hysterectomies which were unrelated to the problem with the patients appendix. Therefore, the hysterectomies were uncalled for since the women had no knowledge of the additional procedure and didn’t give consent (University of Maryland, â€Å"Mississippi Appendectomy†, par. 1). These procedures resulted in the women deprived of their right to reproduce and no significant benefits to science. Lily now understands that her biological mother, the one she has been yearning for her entirety, was in fact never going to be with her. Lily finally accepted this and saw that a mother does not need to be biological, nor does it need to be just one. A female role model, someone strong, courageous, and loving can be found in any women. The racist community Lily grew up in during the 50’s, where black women were looked down upon, was absolutely defied. Lily accepted that her biggest role models, her mothers, were a group of black women. The maturity required while overcoming a deep, racist thought surrounding one’s mind from the most thought-influencing time of development, is extensive and far-reaching. The power of love is finally understood by Lily and therefore embodying her hunger for knowledge of adult knowledge. Lily’s love interest, Zachary Taylor, a black boy is a seemingly outrageous thought for anyone who looked in on the tight night community of the Daughter of Mary. Zach and Lily shared a distant but true and pure love for one another: The silver rectangle dropped down under my shirt, where it dangled cold and certain between my breasts. Zachary Lincoln Taylor rested there, along my heart† (231). This type of love is a first for Lily. Reflexivity in Ethnographic Research and Writing The role of reflexivity in ethnographic research and writing has certain advantages and limits, as it gives the discipline of anthropology another form of interpreting ethnographies. Reflexivity, in terms of work of anthropology, is to insist that anthropologists systematically and rigorously reveal their methodology and themselves as the instrument of data generation. It is the self-consciousness or the work's ability to see itself as a work. There are various styles of reflexivity in ethnographic writing and Dorinne Kondo, Renato Rosaldo, and George Marcus are three anthropologists that influenced the role of reflexivity through their ethnographies. George Marcus describes reflexivity as the â€Å"self-critique, the personal quest, playing on the subjective, the experiential, and the idea of empathy† (Marcus 193). In Ethnography through thick and thin, Marcus writes that the emergence of the different styles of reflexivity in ethnographic writing has come to stand for the influence of postmodernism. Reflexivity emphasizes the point of theoretical and practical questioning, changing the ethnographers view of themselves and their work. This idea becomes inherent in the postmodernists study of the culture of the anthropologist/ethnographer. In much of his essay, Marcus shows that reflexivity is an immense area of comment and interest by questioning: Is reflexivity a license or a method? Furthermore, he writes that reflexivity opens up â€Å"the possibility for the so-called polyphonic text or the completely collaborative project, but more often than not, it merely reinforces the perspective and voice of the lone, introspective fieldworker without challenging the paradigm of ethnographic research at all (Marcus 193). The criminal courts system is the second phase of the criminal justice system.Is very important to maintain professionalism at all times, fairness, integrity, and impartiality is expected of all criminal justice personnel at every stage of the criminal case processing. During this process it is the duty of the courts to ensure that the highest standards and expectations are met and maintained during the entire criminal courts process. The criminal courts must conduct fair and impartial trials, decide criminal cases, and ensure due process, the idea that laws and legal proceedings must be fair.The Constitution guarantees that the government cannot take away a person's basic rights to ‘life, liberty or property, without due process of law. ‘ Courts have issued numerous rulings about what this means in particular cases, (According to www. lectlaw. com). The courts system must determine guilty or innocent, and only imp ose sentences on guilty personnel. The criminal justice system is charged to uphold the law and be fair throughout out the justice process. Protect the freedom and rights of anyone facing processing by the justice system, and must provide a check on the exercise of power by other justice system agenciesThe third and final stage of the criminal justice system is the correctional agencies, once an offender has been sentenced, the corrections stage begins. Once in the correctional system there are many local procedures and the individual are assigned to confinement facilities and treatment facilities. All correctional facilities are charged to provide safe and humane custody and supervision of offenders. Some criminals with minimal offenses are housed in lower security facilities and have many more privileges. Those with more serious crimes such as rape, killers, and organized crimes are housed in the maximum security facilities.The purpose of the correctional facility is to punish cri minals for their crimes and depending on the charge try to rehabilitate the individual, followed by reform, and reintegrate convicted offenders back into the community. The rehabilitation phase is a lengthy process, which includes counseling, and many different classes that are designed to help the convicted offenders make better choices in life. The correctional facility often has repeat offenders; some of these crimes are Murder, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny-theft, and Motor Vehicle Theft.While serving time in a correctional facility, the legal and human fights of the convicted must be treated with respect at all times. The criminal justice system is a long and drawn out process, that has many steps to ensure that everyone is entitled to fairness and equal treatment. Without following the correct procedures, in the criminal justice system there could be errors that could include false imprisonment, and could create many other problems for the criminal justi ce system.
